Razi University started its activities in Kermanshah city in February 1972 with the title of Faculty of Science and in its first academic year (1972-73) admitted 200 students in four fields of physics, chemistry, biology, and mathematics.

After the Islamic Revolution and with the aim to expand higher education, Razi University was inaugurated with the establishment of Faculty of Teacher Training in Sanandaj and Faculty of Animal Husbandry in Ilam. In year 1991, the affiliated faculties of Teacher Training in Sanandaj and Animal Husbandry in Ilam were dissolved from Razi University and developed into Kurdistan University and Ilam University, respectively.

Razi University has a very large, beautiful, and lush campus on the slopes of the historic Taghbostan mountain and currently has 16 faculties including the faculties of Basic Sciences, Chemistry, Literature and Humanities, Social and Educational Sciences, Agriculture, Agricultural Science and Engineering, Veterinary Science, Engineering, Physical Education and Sport Sciences, Art and Architecture, Petroleum and Petrochemicals, Electricity and Computer, Modern Science and Technologies, Engineering in Islamabad Gharb, Management and Accounting in Javanrood, and Agriculture in Songhor. The university draws on the knowledge and expertise of more than 455 faculty members in 56 departments and has a student population of more than 12,000 who are studying in 74 bachelor's programs, 142 master's programs, one post-graduate program, and 69 PhD programs.

In addition to departments and faculties, there are also four research centers at Razi University which have been approved by the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology and include the Family Studies Research Group, the Environmental Studies Research Center, the Nanotechnology Research Institute, and the Institute of Advanced Research in Chemical Engineering.

The 4.5-fold expansion of green space at Razi University provides a pleasant and joyful environment for the enthusiasts of knowledge and science within the context of this cultural and academic complex. The Board of Monitoring And Evaluation Of Universities And Higher Education Institutes  In Kermanshah Province, the Full Representative Of The National Organization Of Educational Testing In The Province, the Secretariat of the Board of Trustees of Razi University and Kermanshah University of Technology, and the Secretariat of the Council for the Coordination of Cultural and Social Activities in the Universities of the Province are all located in this magnate university in the west of the country.

Being ranked among the world's effective universities according to the Leiden ranking system, fifth to 10th in the country's comprehensive universities based on ISC international ranking system, and sixth in the nation's comprehensive universities in the US News ranking system; and hosting national and international events and conducting major national research projects represent only a part of Razi University's honors; the shining jewel of the west of Islamic Iran.

In the field of international scientific cooperation, Razi University is a leading university in Iran and especially in the west of the country and has numerous scientific cooperation agreements with many universities in the region, Islamic world, and European countries. These include cooperation agreements with universities in France, Denmark, Turkey, Sweden, Greece, Oman, and Iraq.

Razi University, on the threshold of half a century of outstanding scientific and cultural activities in the region, proudly is ranked among the top universities of Iran and the world.
